Market Walkabout

Last weekend, while Mama and her bevy of beauties were cooking porridge, I took a walk....just to see what's in store since it was my first time at the Mega Farmers' Market. I must say that I was delighted at looking and sampling what were on offer.

I have a confession though. I managed to walk through only a couple of rows beyond Mama's tent as the market was huge...humongous is the word. My short legs won't be able to walk too much. They were still sore from all the belly dancing I did the previous night. I think I'm going to persuade Mama to take me to this market again so that I can cover the other areas I didn't get to snoopervise. Soon, she said.

I checked out the vegetable stalls. So many greens on offer....
Sweet, delicious local fruits - these are mangosteens...Dad's favourite.
Aaah....the King of Fruits - durians. Am drooling as I write this.
The red ones at the front are fresh lychees, brown ones on the left are longans aka cats' eyes, next are what the locals call dukong.
Really yummy red rambutans....I love its juicy flesh. Most Malaysian fruits require you to peel off the skins before eating....
Madu Lebah = Bees' Honey; 100% Asli = 100% pure; Madu Tualang = Honey collected from Tualang trees.
Aaarrgh...humongous fish for eating.....
...as well as tiny fishies for decoratin'!

Plants were sold too. Mama bought a few...she's restarting her balcony garden...
We found more fruits....those are local mangoes and pineapples.
Humongous citrus - the pomelo. They taste like grapefruits, I was told.
Local red/purple-fleshed dragon fruits (pittaya) were comfy next to local buah salak (snake skin fruits).
Is this tree wintering? Quite artistic shot I must say. This is my blog, I can put any photo I like, OK?
Brad says: The concept behind the Farmers' Market is for farmers to be able to bring their produce to the cities, direct to consumers, thus eliminating middlemen. How true? I don't know. I saw some apples and pears and oranges at the stalls. Definitely not local fruits. There were also stalls selling clothes, household items and luggage. Hmm....those are not farm produce obviously. har har har *evil laughs*

Very colourful! We have Farmer's markets in UK. However, nothing quite so exotic is found there, though we also have stuff sold that is not strictling speaking from farms!!

At the Ipoh pasar tani, they even sell shoes, and sometimes there'd be promotions for cars etc. Kalau depa promote kereta 3 for RM10, then I buy lah... ;-)

Aunty Carolyn,
I've seen pictures and documentaries on Covent Garden....though that's not exactly a farmers' market, right? They're starting a market just outside our gates. I'll go check it out this weekend. har har har *evil laughs*

Aunty Pi,
Shoes? There are even stalls selling Smartag and Touch&Go cards! You can't even get a toy car with that price. har har har *evil laughs*

I love the fruits and garden plants they offer, but oh dear, I am not too happy with them selling little fishes as pets. Who is to provide after-sales advice? Will the buyer know how to care for the fishes? What if it is an impulse buy, and the fishes suffer? Who will be responsible?

CO78,
There were also hamsters and ferrets on sale!!!! Luckily there were no kittens or puppies or else.... har har har *evil laughs*

I wish I lived by your Mom. She likes all the things that I like to do! I adore going to Farmer's markets and this looked just amazing!

Aunty Caren,
I can't imagine you and Mama living next to each other. You two will be off gallivanting all day long, drooling over Curtis, cooking up a storm. Hey...but Cody and I will be bosom buddies. har har har *evil laughs*

So many fruits we've never seen before!

Sandy said...

Ooh... pomelo !!!! I prefer pomelo than grapefruit ! Grapefruit sucks, I think people endure grapefruit simply because of the myth that grapefruit can help people slim down. This is great Brad, you're encouraging everyone to eat more fruits and veggies and fishes ! Healthy ^^

Fin dear,
Come move to a tropical country. It's more colourful with plenty varieties of fruits. har har har *happy laughs*

Cat-from-Sydney said...

Tante Sandy,
Do you know that the local name for pomelo is limau bali? But I didn't see this citrus in Bali. Have you? har har har *evil laughs*

In order to look sopan dan santun, kita kena pakai baju bila ke pasar, kan? Tulah diorang jual baju sekali tu .. Unlike you mmg tak pakai baju, kaaan? har3 *triple intensity of evil laugh*

Wan Sharif said...

Belum jumpa lagi pasar tani yang jual buah kerkut malam, buah jambu arang dan buah kemunting.. Lama berdo'oh doh dok jamah buah buah tu ;(

Cat-from-Sydney said...

Aunty CS,
Walaupun tiada berbaju, kucing adalah binatang paling alim di dunia. Kalau tidak, masakan ada peribahasa: Alim-alim Kucing? Cuba kalau manusia alim tidak berbaju? Gilalah digelar orang. har har har *evil laughs*

Cat-from-Sydney said...

Ayoh Wang,
Pasar pagi di Jerteh, Besut, ada dijual buah kemunting itu. Adapun buah-buahan yang lain itu tiadalah hamba mengenalinya. Tapi hamba kenal buah perah, sangat enak jika dijeruk. har har har *evil laughs*
