On this auspicious day, I want to wish you all Merry Christmas, joy to the world, peace on earth, blah blah blah blah.

Someone erected this tree in my neighbourhood. Nice, eh? 

Secondly, I'd like you all to reflect on what gift you've bought for your loved ones. I hope it's something meaningful....like a kitten or a puppy. However, such gifts come with great responsibility.

We saw these kittens for sale at a neighbourhood petshop. Cute but they come with tremendous responsibility.

Consider these:
1. Do you, as the giver, have enough knowledge about the animal you're giving to another? This is to make sure you can answer questions that may be asked by a precocious child.
2. Is the recipient of an age where animal care is not a burden? It's important to get the parents' consent as they may end up as the carer.
3. Can the recipient afford to take good care of the animals? Well, vets are not cheap, as well as food, litter and toys.
4. Can the recipient afford the time to spend in the company of the animal? It would be hard on a puppy if it ends up with a master that prefers Wii or XBox than walking the dog.
5. Have you done enough research on the mental health of the recipient? It's very painful to hear of cases where pets become victims of abuse.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Remember, most of these animals are helpless against humans. Even in cases where animals attack humans, most times it's because they were provoked in the first place.

So, if you hesitate when you see that cute kitten, think whether you should purchase that living being or just get a plush toy. After all, the plushies come in many shapes and sizes now, and they don't need to be fed.

Mama, am I getting birthday or Xmas pressies?

The Purrfect Wedding

My Mama attended a very interesting wedding that took place at Aunty If and Uncle Is' place today.

First, it's very unusual for people to get married in Ramadan. Second, it was all decided, confirmed and arranged within days, not even a week. Third, the bride, Aisha, when asked what would she like as mahar, said, "I'd like a kitten, please."

Here he is. DanDan the mahar kitten.

Thus, in between arranging for some sheikhs to come and solemnise the katb kitab ceremony, inviting friends and family to the occasion, then re-inviting them because initially gave the wrong address, the bridegroom, Yusuf, had to look for a suitable kitten all over Sydney. It just so happen that most pet shops don't seem to have kittens in stock this time of the year. "If would have been easier if she had asked for a diamond stud," he said.

"You should have seen the sheikhs faces when told that the mahar is a kitten," Mama said. She's imagining a meeting of the council of imams tonight where the talks will all be centred on this particular wedding.

In accepting the fact that the couple was unanimous in their decision, the sheikhs said usually the mahar is something that you can put a value to like jewellery, land titles etc. However, in history, there have been cases where a few verses from the Holy Book were given as mahar. Anyway, as long as the bride accepts wholeheartedly, it is valid.

Ah, cats do rule this world. Watch out for more people following Yusuf and Aisha's footsteps. Meow!

Lucky Toby

In the UK, a kitten has survived despite being trapped in a washing machine for a full cycle.
Toby, the lucky plucky tabby, is thought to have crawled into the washing machine before it was switched on, to escape the summer heatwave.

Doesn't he bear an uncanny resemblance to Brad? hmmm...long lost distant cousin, perhaps?

It was only after the machine had completed its 30-degree cycle that Toby's owner discovered him.
The seven-week-old kitten was rushed from his owner's home in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, to a local vet. Staff at the Kirkton Veterinary Centre warmed the kitten and provided him with oxygen.
Vet David McLaren said: "The kitten was unconscious and hypothermic with an exceptionally low temperature and had clearly swallowed a lot of water.
"As well as the problems caused by the cold water, we also suspected it might have suffered fractures or internal injuries as a result of being spun during the wash."
The pet has now recovered, with no long-term ill-effects, and is back home with his mother and four brothers and sisters.

Angelina's Note to Self: Make sure Brad doesn't jump into the washing machine again.
